ACTIVE IN ATHENS

BY AUSTIN WAHLE – We all know that back to school feeling that Athens gives us in the fall semester, and no, I’m not talking about the excitement for football, the nervousness for new and hard classes, or the thrill of being back in your favorite place. I’m referring to the sweat running down your face as you climb Ag Hill, the constant need for deodorant, and the racing heart that is characteristic of a casual walk to class. Although the temperature seems to soar higher than Rodrigo Blankenship’s kickoffs and the hills roll more than the dreaded tide, people can be spotted running, biking, and otherwise remaining incredibly active even in the heat and unforgiving terrain. One thing Athens will always be, besides the home of the Dawgs, is an active community. An active community is a welcoming environment for students who are trying to fend off the Freshman Fifteen. Although school can seem like an all-consuming daunting challenge, it is still very important to create time to remain healthy in both your body and mind. In just a few short paragraphs, you will soon know a few easy and fun ways to remain active in Athens, despite the heat and hills.

Athens plays host for a variety of runs throughout the school year that range in length and difficulty from 5Ks to half marathons. One specific run that has become an annual tradition is the AthHalf and the AthHalf 5K, which are held typically in the fall. The AthHalf double feature consists of a route that runs through UGA’s campus along with Athens’ historic district with live music from local bands to distract you from the burning in your legs. The AthHalf raises money for music and arts education for K-8thgrade Athens’ youth.

If you are looking instead for a way to beat the heat, then Big Dogs on The River could be for you. Big Dogs on The River offers kayaking on Athens’ Middle Oconee River that typically only occupies two to three hours. The fun times and refreshing water make the workout almost unrecognizable, and yet it is a workout nonetheless.

If you are less into the outdoors and more into a more structured workout, there are several fitness classes offered throughout Athens that might be exactly what you are looking for. Ramsey offers a host of different workouts ranging from Zumba to Cycling to Deep Water classes. These classes are individually crafted to be both hard and stimulating, ensuring a workout that is worthwhile. If you would rather not venture into Ramsey, there are also plentiful workout places like Orange Theory that could be your perfect fit.

Despite the heat and hills, Athens remains an active community that cannot be deterred by some sweat or some sore legs. Athens’ offers countless opportunities to remain active and to explore the local nature and history. This year when approached with the daunting Athens’ hills, choose to believe that life is a climb, but the view is great.
