The Flu Vaccine: It’s That Time of Year Again

BLAYNEY KLEIN – If you’re anything like me, getting a flu shot is certainly on your mind, but not necessarily on your to-do list. If you need a little convincing, keep reading.

Here are a few reasons why you should get this year’s flu shot:

Your Health and Safety

Your own health and well-being is worth a quick trip to your pharmacy, grocery store or physician’s office. This tiny inconvenience is worth the hassle now because the flu will be much worse if you catch it. The CDC estimates that the flu vaccine prevented 4.4 million influenza illnesses in 2018 and 2019. We know the flu shot works, now it’s up to you to protect yourself.

Your Loved Ones

If your health and well-being isn’t enough to get you out the door and on your way to get a flu shot, think about the people around you. Remember that the flu can be deadly. For the elderly, infants, and those with chronic illnesses, the flu is no joke.

COVID-19

This year’s flu will be no walk in the park. With COVID-19 lurking, hospitals are already overworked and undersupplied. In 2018 and 2019, the influenza vaccine was thought to prevent about 58,000 influenza-associated hospitalizations and 2.3 million influenza-associated medical visits. Limiting the number of flu hospitalizations is a crucial step in combating COVID-19. We can all do our part.

The Deals

If you’re not convinced yet, know that various companies offer discounts and coupons when you get a flu shot. Get your flu shot at Publix and receive a $10 Publix gift card. Just to warn you, Publix offers this deal for a “limited time,” though they do not specify how long that really is.

If you choose to get vaccinated at Safeway, you’ll receive 10% off your next grocery purchase. Plus, if you’re super busy or just want to limit social interaction as much as possible, you can sit in your car while getting vaccinated.

Choose Walgreens for your vaccination needs and receive $5 off your $20 purchase. This offer is valid until November 30.

Flu season is upon us. Though you still have time, get your flu shot soon. The vaccine takes about two weeks to kick in and help fight off the virus.
